Insects in Texas are a daily encounter. There are natural ways to control bugs. Texas is hot and humid and the perfect environment for all kinds of bugs. There are flies, fleas, mosquitoes, cinch bugs, fire ants, roaches, crickets, blister bugs, chiggers, termites, bees, and many more kinds of sucking, flying, root eating, foliage feeding, chewing insects. When you start to see holes in plant leaves, severed leaves or buds, leaf curling or yellowing leaves then you have some very tiny insects around. If you don’t keep every crumb picked up off the floor and sometimes even if you do you will see roaches. When you are outside trying to barbeque you will be bothered by flies, mosquitoes, and gnats during certain times of the year. When you plant a garden you could see aphids and these come by the billions. You may see scale insects, spider mites, foliar mealy bugs or symphysis. Anywhere you live and no matter how you live in Texas you will come in contact with bugs daily. Beautiful rock homes can be infested with scorpions and your crops can be totally destroyed by grasshoppers.

Insects can cause more damage than tornadoes and hurricanes put together. Some of these insects can spread disease and some are just nuisance bugs, such as the pillbug. All kids in Texas like to touch a pillbug and watch it roll into a ball. Pillbugs, earwigs, and springtails are nuisance pests and cause no damage to plants.

People need to have an understanding between the bad bugs and the beneficial bugs. You want the good bugs to help you get rid of the bad bugs. If you use chemicals you will destroy all of the bugs, the good ones, and the bad ones. Try to use natural ways to get rid of insects. A mixture of garlic and pepper in water can be sprayed on plants to prevent some insect damage. Also, tobacco spray works on some insects. Keep your garden and yard healthy and this will help make the plants more insect resistant.

When you see dry areas in your grass, even though you have watered properly, then you may be infested with chinch bugs. Use the garlic spray on these bad bugs. For fire ants, sometimes all it takes is to pour boiling water down the middle of the fire ant hill.

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a natural product that can be used to rid your yard and garden of insects. It comes from the skeletons of sea creatures called diatoms. This product will cut and dehydrate the insect. It looks like a powder to humans and is very safe to use just by sprinkling it around the infested areas.

Some people like to hang up glue traps for flying insects. Some believe that ultrasonic boxes are very effective. Some believe that chemicals can do no harm if used correctly. They believe that the dose makes the poison. After all, the chlorine in our drinking water is a pesticide too. If you apply your own pesticides instead of hiring a professional please read and follow all directions. More is not better.
