A beginner’s guide to gardening

Whether you have a green thumb or not, everyone can be a good gardener. Spring is the best time to start digging and gardening. Serious gardeners spend a lot of their time in the summer watering, weeding and making sure that their plants grow. However, not all the gardeners that venture in serious gardening become successful. Some of them end up wasting a lot of their free time and eventually amount to nothing. Whether you are practicing gardening as a profession or as a hobby, you need to do it perfectly.

Why Gardening is important

There are some obvious reasons why gardening is important and among the main reasons is that we cannot drink, breathe or eat without plants with us. Just like water, if there are no plants in the world, there will be no life.

The other thing is that daily gardening chores are a way of exercising. Waking up in the morning to water, weed, mulch or just harvest your produce is a way of keeping your mind and body active. It combines low-impact exercises with other benefits that we cannot find in the GYM.

What many people don’t know is that being in a natural surrounding can lower blood pressure, reduce stress and improve concentration. There are several studies showing us that there’s a natural healing in every natural environment. Just listening to those natural sounds of falling leaves or the sounds of birds in your garden can be relaxing and comforting.

Vegetable gardening

Vegetable gardening gives people a feeling of happiness. The feeling that comes with knowing that we have natural home-grown produce can make you happy. Again getting vegetables from the store can be expensive and overwhelming. Some stores use chemicals to store farm produce which can have some long-term effects on your health.  Knowing that you will feed on natural and fresh tomatoes, cabbages, spinach or broccoli makes someone feel happy and accomplished.

Working in your own garden helps you learn many things. It is impossible to work in a place without gaining knowledge and experience. You will find yourself figuring out the perfect match for the type of soil, making a perfect garden and also gain problem-solving skills and become creative.

If there’s a community garden in your locality, then you are likely to come close to other people. The reality is that community gardens bring people together more than anything else. Getting a group to garden together or even take responsibilities on the matters that affect the production of your garden makes people think together and through this, new developments and skills come up.

Local food is the best food. When you produce food in your garden, you are not only benefiting yourself but also your neighbors. You will be contributing positively to the environment which works for both your family and your neighbors. The food that you produce locally on your farm is fresher and better tasting than those produced commercially by the use of chemicals.

Types of gardening

If you think gardening is just about planting flowers, then you are lost. You can create a themed garden and choose the plants to attract butterflies, plants for food production or just establish your backyard pond.

Woodland gardens

You must be natural with what you put in your garden. Woodland gardens can be filled with beautiful plants and flowers. These gardens are a very cost-efficient way of growing a variety of native flowers and plants. This is the place you can grow your wildflowers or woodland plants.

Botanical garden

A botanical garden is a specified place where you can grow plants and label them on according to their botanical names. Although botanical gardens are owned by universities and other institutions, some people do the same in their homes. The main reason for investing in a botanical garden is to keep a collection of different species of plants for scientific researches, education and also for other purposes depending on the special interests of the individual and other factors.

Tropical gardens

Tropical gardens are easy to create and also are good for people who enjoy the tropical appeal. Many plants have a tropical origin and hence they can be cultivated based on the same features. You can include palms, croton, pathos, and dieffenbachia.

Environmental gardens

There are some people who create specific gardens just to save the world. If this is your ultimate goal, then you can invest in an environmental garden. They range from xeriscaping gardens to rain gardens and wild gardens.

How to start a garden

It can be daunting and overwhelming to start a garden. You have to sit down and make several decisions before you get started. However, there are several questions that you have to ask yourself before you start a garden.

What do you want to start planting in your garden?

What do you invasion in your mind?

How much time do you want to devote to the whole activity?

After you have answered all the above questions, you now need to select a very good site for your work. Consider the amount of sun exposure if you don’t have enough time to water the garden. Check the soil and consult if it is the perfect soil for what you want to start planting in your garden. You also need to feed the soil and the plants will take care of themselves. Take your soil test and get expert advice on the same issue.

Consider the time of the year before you choose a plant to start with. Plants sustain different climatic conditions and hence you should have it in mind as the first thing before rushing to plant onions and tomatoes in a climate that you aren’t sure they will withstand.

Prepare your garden and allow time for the soil to aerate. After digging and preparing your garden, you now have to allow it a whole week before you start planting.

What plants to consider?

As a beginner, there are several things that come as a dream. Probably you don’t know the type of soil that works the best for the plants you want to consider. However, in this part, I am going to help you choose the best plants for different climatic conditions.

Tomatoes and Peppers

When you want to start your own small garden at home and grow vegetables for your own consumption, then you can start a small greenhouse at the back of your yard and grow tomatoes. You can start by planting them in a nursery and then transplant them after 6-8 weeks.

After 6-8 weeks, transplant them on your greenhouse and take good care of them. If good care is endowed with tomatoes and peppers, they can grow well and give a huge production.

Onions

If you live in a warmer area, then consider planting onions in your garden. Onions like the cool weather in the early part of their growth. This means that you should plant them in spring. In some areas, onions are grown as winter crops.

Carrots

If you are gardening your own compound and you don’t grow flowers, grow something you can consume at home. Carrots are a better way of interacting with nature in your compound. They are sweetest when fresh and when planted under uncontrolled conditions. Therefore, you can set aside a small piece of land in your backyard and grow carrots.

There is a wide variety of useful plants that you can grow in your garden. Consider broccoli, beans, Brussels sprouts, beets and leaf amaranth.

Calendula

Who said you only have to grow consumable plants in your garden. You can as well grow some flowers to make your garden look good, beautiful and attractive. This flower is every man’s annual favorite flower. It can grow up to 24 inches tall. It is a very useful herb in your compound because it can kick away some of the most troublesome pests out of your garden.

There are several other flowers that you can plant in your garden including California poppy, Chamomile, Nasturtium, Cilantro, sweet alyssum and many more.

Gardening tips

When the climate is getting cold and you have tomatoes in your garden, then save them by simply pulling them up and bringing them to a warmer place. Ripening tomatoes are damaged by both extreme sun and extreme cold.

You will be dealing with several gardening tools and sometimes it can be difficult to locate them in case they got lost in the garden. To help you in this, paint them in bright colors such as white or yellow to ensure you can locate them in your garden.

Another thing is that you should ensure you have mixed compost on your garden the right way. There’s always an easy way to mix compost and that is to spread it over the area after the harvesting is done. Cover with a winter mulch such as chopped leaves and let them decompose naturally.

Always get rid of garden produce that is becoming overripe or decomposing. They are a target for pests and diseases. Ensure those decomposing tomatoes, carrots and pumpkins are getting rid of early enough.
